Winning Sequences

During the Bolton Liverpool match, a comment was made that Liverpool had won the last 10 times the teams had met in the league. This seemed quite a lot, so I thought I would check it out and see if it was a record in the EPL

Seems not

No surprises that the top teams dominate this category . However, it is easy to forget that Man City used to be a run-of-the-mill Premiership team; Arsenal had an unbeaten run against them in their first 18 EPL fixtures
The standout Man U v Wigan sequence is ongoing. United have outscored Wigan 42-4 in their thirteen EPL games netting the most recent 23 goals in the fixture!

As we started with Liverpool, here are their best and worst sequences

One other tidbit: the Liverpool-Birmingham fixture featured a run of seven consecutive draws until a 5-0 defeat for the Midland team in last year’s relegation season. Only the Aston Villa-West Ham matchup equals this with no other combo even producing six ties on the trot

Goal Bonanza

A comment made at the recent Liverpool v Newcastle fixture, was that this was the most prolific matchup in the EPL and the game itself – 3-1 victory for the Reds – helped enhance that argument (the average is about 2.6 per game)
According to my data, it actually falls just short of highest scoring fixture, another one featuring Liverpool

Spurs are well represented on the list but in each case coming off at the short end of the stick. Their W-D-L record of 3-14-22 against Chelsea being particularly extreme
These fixtures benefit from featuring teams which have spent most, if not all, of the past 20 years in the Premiership. Looking at the highest averages where at least 20 fixtures have been played, we get the following results

Somewhat surprisingly, the Chelsea v Sunderland matchup is a clear standout. The Blues victories include 7-2 and 6-2 margins but the Wearsiders have also racked up three wins by three goal margins. However, they are more reknowned for their lack of goal-scoring as the table of the least prolific games shows

Five of the Leeds v Aston Villa games have been goalless
