NOW no longer

It is an end of an era but as the graph below confirms the News of the World has shown a pretty steady decline in readership since the post War years and obviously was proving more of a distraction than it was worth. Apart from an upturn in circulation in the mid – 80s when the paper went tabloid followed by a profit surge as the strength of the Unions was destroyed at the end of that decade the paper has suffered along with virtually all its competitors. Possibly the fight for survival lead to some of the over aggressive behaviour that spelt its doom

Interesting that the concern about plurality (admittedly of TV) comes at a time when the NOW has fallen far both in totalsales and share of the market – as shown in table below (All data courtesy of Wikipedia)
