R graphs – 2008/9 game by game results

Following on from the Chernoff Faces graph, I have been looking at other uses of the R graphical package

Here is an example of showing all club results at once, in this case the game by game results of the
2008/9 season

Interesting to see how well Liverpool and Chelsea started in comparison with eventual champions Man U, who ran off a mid-season 11 game winning sequence – including eight victories by a single goal.

If Only

Frank Lampard has not had such an impact on the Chelsea team this season with a paltry three assists to add to five open play goals. However, his influence remains immense. In the 35 matches played to date, Chelsea have averaged 1.71 points per game with him out of the side and 2.19 when he has made an appearance. If he had not missed so many games through injury, it might have been Man U facing a must win game this Sunday rather than the Blues

Sometimes you do get a win-win situation. Since Roy Hodgson was turfed by Liverpool, to be replaced by Kenny Dalglish, but soon thereafter hitched up with WBA, both teams have fared well. Only Chelsea top Liverpool in points scored since then with West Brom in a creditable 7th place
