I can almost guarantee that nobody still alive was watching Manchester City's game ninety-five years ago today, a 2-2 home draw against Arsenal. The result left them in a handy eighth place on 26 points (at a time when a win was worth just two points), 10 clear of relegation-haunted Bradford City.
The remainder of the season was not so good for the club, although Sheffield Wednesday, Manchester United and Liverpool all garnered fewer points. Unfortunately for City, they had all been higher placed in early February and to make matters-worse, Bradford compiled one the best record in the division over their final fourteen games.
Relegation all came down to the final mid-week games. On Wednesday the 28th April, City lost 1-0 to Bristol City but were still ahead of Liverpool on goal difference and Bradford by two points.
Manchester United then did their neighbours no favours by losing at Bradford, and then Liverpool pulled off the surprise of the season by winning at champions-elect Newcastle United.
So City were relegated in spite of scoring 50 goals in nineteen home games and having a negative goal difference of only two (their fellow relegatees Leicester were -48 after allowing more than 100 goals). They were also only five points from a top six finish and would have finished three points clear of danger under the 'three points for a win' method The good news is that they rebounded the following season as Division two champions
